Horsefeathers Roadhouse Celebrates as the Best Waterin’ Hole in Lake Norman

Horsefeathers Property History: In 1952, the property started as a small 100 sq. ft. wooden fuel service shack with a single gas pump. The developer was a local farmer, Gabe Little. The current building was built in 1955 as a grocery store and fuel stop. Its footprint was (and is) 8,000 square feet evenly divided on two levels. In later years, the lower level became a bar and game room called “Jack’s”, operated by Jack Todd, wife, and family.

Frequent visitors were motorcycle riders and local farmers joining together to enjoy this countryside watering hole. Later, after Lake Norman was established in the early 1960’s, the ownership changed hands and Paul and Peggy Helms took over renaming the business as “Paul’s Downstairs”. It5 soon became well known in Sherrills Ford, North Carolina as a place to eat hamburgers, hot dogs, shoot pool, drink beer, and enjoy original country music.

In 1994, Sherry and Tim Anderton bought the building, adjoining 2 acres of property, with 245 ft. of water frontage surrounding a cove on Lake Norman. The Andertons totally gutted the building, redesigned and rebuilt the interior format, and added a 2100 sq. ft. deck on the lower lever overlooking the two acre park and the Lake Norman cove.

Today the restaurant operates 365 days a year with a large upper level outdoor patio, a 24 tap bar room, and 2,000 square foot dance floor that serves as a dining room when live music is not performing on stage. Today the lower interior level consists of a 2100 square foot game room with seating, a 13 seat “quiet bar”, and a high production kitchen that operates every day of the year. The primary fare is a long historic line of Southern barbeque products that are mainly prepared in a separate, wood fired smokehouse that is known by many as the largest stand-alone BBQ smokehouse on Lake Norman and Western North Carolina. The high production cooker can produce as many an 18 pork shoulders on a single nine hour turn. The property features ample parking provided by lots on both the upper and lower levels of the property.

Horsefeathers as a Business Entity: It took the Andertons two years to rebuild the facility and do the necessary earthwork to make the property accommodating for a 220 seat restaurant and bar with plentiful parking. In 1996, the remodeled property opened up under the current name of Horsefeathers Roadhouse. Over the past 19 years various upgrades and additions to the facility have brought it to its present day operations. The environment is dramatically non-corporate, “off the wall”, rustic, and welcoming in the style of country western. The exterior of the building has trompe l’oeil facings depicting the features of an old western town, complete with drug store, Western Union service, general store, and jail. There are even a few horse hitching posts out front. The customer demographic is highly mixed with locals, professionals, construction workers, farmers, lake residents, campground vacationers, families, bikers, and many casual visitors who come from many miles around to enjoy the vast array of Southern BBQ products. The environment is as a relaxed hang out where everyone can take their time and enjoy the food, the drinks, the games, and the camaraderie of the many “regulars” who call Horsefeathers Roadhouse their second home.

While spring across the Lake Norman region may signal the unofficial start of serious BBQ’n in backyards across Mooresville, Denver and beyond, here at Horsefeathers Roadhouse our “barbie” is smokin’ and always fired up year-round! Our separate, wood-fired smokehouse out back, known by the locals as the largest stand-alone BBQ smokehouse on Lake Norman and for many miles around, can produce as many an 18 pork shoulders on a single nine hour turn. Who said pigs can’t fly?

The Lake Norman Legend of the Horse Feather and the Infamous Hawg Wing

Many eons ago, the most revered object in the entire realm, was a “Horse Feather” from the winged beast of Pegasus. The feather, it was said, had mysterious powers, much like Pegasus itself, and could bestow upon its holder riches and fortunes beyond comprehension.

The Governor of Dry Pond, as the area of Carolina was known back then, issued a proclamation, making the horse feather a symbol of peace, harmony, and happiness. The Catawba town of Dry Pond and the surrounding areas celebrated the proclamation by feasting on a particular “rib” from a barbequed pig as they all consumed large vats of ale. The event was said to have gone on for seven days and seven nights. It was on the seventh night at the seventh hour that the most curious situation took place. A young Catawba Indian boy entered the BBQ pit area and upon his head was a headband with a single feather in it. It was a beautiful horse feather. The Indian boy removed the feather and presented it to the governor with the words: “To benefit mankind, we present this horse feather”. The governor thanked the lad and assured him that the feather was in good hands. The boy left as he had come.

The governor thought long and hard. He finally decided to ask the feather for a treat that every man, woman, and child, Indian or settler, could agree was the tastiest, most mouthwatering, delicious morsel of meat in the Catawba land. At that moment, a flash of lightning startled the governor. He looked out and gazed upon, what was once an empty parcel of land; only to see a tin roof building where once only forest stood. He could smell the unbelievably zingy BBQ aroma drifting out from the simple structure. He watched as the town folks and Indians alike approached and cautiously entered the structure. It was then that he heard the joyous voices becoming louder and louder. It sounded like a chorus of angels. They were singing the praises of that original rib from the ancient town of Dry Pond. Now and forever it will now be known as the Hawg Wing; the mystical, magical creation that defies all definition and imagination. The mighty Hawg Wing stands for peace, harmony, and happiness as it “wallers” in bounteous barbecue sauce.

So, dear patron, now that thou know the Legend of the Horse Feather and the Hawg Wing, thou are hereby anointed to spread the word to all thy brethren, and invite them to feast with thou on this most uncommon treat. Thou must direct them, with all thy will and might, to that particular tin roof structure near the grand lake, adjacent to where the mighty forest lay fallow. We fare thee well as thou send these legends, now and forever, throughout the Catawba land. And so it was written for all the decades.

Horsefeathers Roadhouse, Sherrills Ford in Lake Norman, takes extreme pride in the United States Armed Forces and the men and women in service who keep us free. In fact, we fly four Stars and Stripes from our roadhouse roof for the sole purpose of honoring each of our main armed forces: Air Force, Army, Navy and Marines!

Here at HFR, we are deeply aware that freedom is never free. The ownership and staff at Horsefeathers Roadhouse honors and respects our military service and its importance, and we recognize the great cost for those in service and their families.

Of course, the Horsefeathers Roadhouse always has its “Welcome Shingle” out for all of you. We encourage all veterans and active service personnel to come to HFR to meet up with family and friends at our lakeside hangout any time. Our doors are open for all who serve and have served.

LKN Famous Chicken Wings Carry the Ball to Spring: Horsefeathers Roadhouse in Sherrills Ford

Think Spring Training Baseball, March Madness, and the 2015 NFL Draft, and thoughts of great bar food aren’t far behind. This is especially true with Horsefeathers Roadhouse and our finger food like our Lake Norman famous chicken wings served baked, fried, smoked, crispy, crunchy, saucy, smoky, spicy, cheesy, and tangy – whatever makes LKN happy! Maybe you were among the many munching on our wings when the Patriots denied the Seahawks the trophy during Super Bowl XLIX on the very last play.

Here’s an eye popping number: The National Chicken Council had predicted that 1.25 billion wings would be eaten during Super Sunday; enough wings to put 572 wings on every seat in all 32 NFL stadiums, according to the Council. We love stats!

Here at Horsefeathers Roadhouse our smokehouse has been crankin’ full blast as we all get ready for spring! We’ve been smokin’ BBQ since 1996. And we do it with the goal of keeping our guests happy and well-fed no matter what the event or season.

Horsefeathers Roadhouse shares some pretty cool “tidbits” from the National Chicken Council’s 2015 Wing Report:

Wing consumption increases the most during sporting events: At HFR, we’re not big on keeping count. Whether smoked or fried, we are always happy to just keep ’em coming for dining in-house or for personal party carry out orders. “Grab and go” is cool too.

Fifty-six percent of U.S. adults who eat chicken wings choose ranch dressing on the side: Okay, but we top that at Horsefeathers Roadhouse. Our famous wings are tossed in your choice of sauce, and served with celery & carrots with either house ranch or blue cheese. Woot!

Following ranch dressing at the top of the list and then in descending order: Wing lovers choose BBQ sauce; blue cheese; hot sauce; celery; carrots, and eating ’em plain. At HFR Lake Norman we do it all, including a choice of twelve different BBQ sauces ranging from sweet, spicy or tangy.

Fifty-four percent of wing eaters prefer bone-in wings to boneless: At HFR we serve up both with traditional, bone-in wings rockin’ it smoked or fried, or boneless with our hand-breaded, fried, finished in the oven Chicken Tenderloins. We do aim to please!

Chop, chop: Most wings are cut into two portions. The actual number of wing portions to be sold in 2015 is estimated by the National Chicken Council at 28 billion. Whoa! HFR plans to do its part by serving up a sizable share of those wings – piping hot and sauced right. Just come on in and let our friendly wait staff know exactly the way you like ’em!

Who is hungry for something other than our Horsefeathers famous chicken wings? A popular choice is always our Hawg Wing Dinner (3 smoked & grilled pork shanks slathered in Horsefeathers BBQ and served with southern slaw, hushpuppies & one side). Maybe our house smoked pulled pork hits the spot. We also offer “melt in your mouth” slow smoked beef brisket; our baby back ribs are so dang good they should really be illegal. They are so good and come with plenty of napkins. Our hand-packed flame-grilled burgers should be featured on that national food channel; plus we have pork tacos, fish and chips, and our southern fried chicken breast.

Since we are the only true Roadhouse in Lake Norman, we know the wetter the better. Don’t forget to order an ice cold beer or two or one of our other fine beverages!
